My name is Paisley White and I am an independent designer and builder. My family and I live just outside of Duncan, BC, on beautiful Vancouver Island. I was called here by the valley of Big Leaf Maple trees (Acer macrophyllum) and a passion for woodwork. I began working with wood as an arborist, climbing and pruning trees in central Alberta, salvaging anything that looked interesting from the wood chipper or firewood pile. Since then this work has evolved into building Ember & Coal furniture, but the perspective still remains. In 2013 I decided to take a joinery foundation program to further hone my building skills and enhance my design abilities. Today, in the workshop, I see each tree as a living piece of a greater forest; each slab of wood as a part of the whole. In all of my work, I strive to connect with this essential life-force, and honor the life and story of the tree.

I vow to commit no act that will
extinguish the life of this tree.
